Examples include but are not limited to: (vi) Approving interim and final site restoration
measures.
This category is applicable for this project because this is a final site restoration measure, will be
completed within I month of start, and will not include any road construction or repair.
Compliance with other laws is documented and can be found in the project file, including: NFMA, ESA,
NHPA, CWA, CAA, and various EOs
Project Actions
Safeguard Shaft
The mine is located north of Durango on USFS land. The site is accessed from Highway#550 on the Lime
Creek Trail. The trail receives frequent use by hikers. The site contains an open shaft with the
dimensions of(4')four feet by (7') six feet with a depth of(30')thirty feet. Currently, there is no barrier
to public access i.e.fence, around the shaft and there is evidence of visitation to the site.
The proposed work includes installing seven cubic yards (7 CYs) of polyurethane foam (PUF) and then
backfilling the portal by hand with onsite material. Approximately one cubic yard (ICY) of material will
be disturbed to backfill the opening. The work will be completed in accordance with PUF in accordance
Specification 9.0, of the General Bid Specifications, 2009.
Surface disturbance of the area will be minimal as we are using PUF to safeguard the opening. No trees
will be removed to complete the closure. All disturbed areas will be seeded and revegetated according
to the Revegetation Specification 20.0, of the General Bid Specifications, 2009. Access to the site will be
limited to foot traffic and pack horses.
Trash and Debris Removal
Mining equipment and debris remain on site. Of particular concern is a large battery that is exposed to
the elements, propane tanks and generators. The contractor will remove all debris and equipment, as
specified by the Project Manager, using pack horses. Equipment and debris will be disposed of in an
authorized waste disposal facility. The metal headframe and other metal items will be dismantled and
repurposed to create a bottom form for the PUF plug.
Project Dates
The work will be completed in the fall of 2022. State of Colorado DRMS will implement the project.
Agencies, Organizations and Persons Contacted
This project was listed on the on-line SJNF Schedule of Proposed Actions. No public comment was
received.
