The landowner, Dr. Corley, was present for the
inspection. Only portions of the site which were adjacent to the Southfield Mine permit boundary were inspected
as a result of the meeting which occurred on November 13, 2018 between the Corley Company and the Division.
For more information on that meeting, please refer to previous inspection reports conducted by the Division.
Access was granted on site as part of the pre-operation inspection for potential maintenance to the Magpie
Diversion which is appart of the Southfield Mine permit however overlaps with the GEC permit boundary. The
GEC Mine was a surface mine which the Division has revoked the bond and terminate the permit. Therefore, no
mine operator remains. All bond monies available to the Division were utilized by the Division for reclamation
activities and no reclamation bond money remains to conduct maintenance activities. The weather was cloudy and
ground conditions were dry. Temperatures during the inspection were around seventy degrees fahrenheit.
RECLAMATION SUCCESS - Rule 4.15, Rule 3:
Reclamation was inspected which has had intermixed success. The East Pit Area and Chen’s Hill area were all
inspected for revegetation. The majority of the area were well established with vegetation along areas of lesser
slope. Sloped areas are less vegetated due to erosional features that have developed over the years during large
precipitation events. Gullies can be observed along the northern slopes of the East Pit Area as well as the Chen’s
Hill. Major erosion is noted along drainage intersection between Chen’s Hill and the old county road that runs
through the site. Over the years, Pond A has completely filled with sediment and drainage along that area naturally
has been directed around the pond back into the native drainage.
