The mission of Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is
to perpetuate the wildlife resources of the state, to provide a quality state parks system, and
to provide enjoyable and sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities that educate and
inspire current and future generations to serve as active stewards of Colorado's natural
resources. CPW has reviewed the proposed location for the new Roberts Gravel Pit and has
the following comments regarding wildlife.
The proposed gravel pit is located on portion of the Southwest Quarter and the Northwest
Quarter Section of Section 22, Township 14 South, Range 46 West of the 6th Principle Meridian
in Cheyenne County, Colorado. The parcel is owned by Cheyenne County Board of County
Commissioners. The proposed gravel pit is 32.37-acres including roadway access and requires
a Regular 112 Operation Reclamation Permit.
The current land use of the parcel for the proposed gravel pit is grassland that may be
expired Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) grass. The grassland vegetation is dominated by
shortgrass prairie species. Drytand farm ground is located to the north of the proposed gravel
pit. To the east of the proposed gravel pit is the Cheyenne County landfill which is currently
in operation. Highway 40 and a set of railroad tracks boarder the proposed gravel pit to the
south. To the south of Highway 40 is a mix of dryland farm ground and CRP grass. Dryland
farm ground boarders the proposed gravel pit to the west. An unnamed creek runs through
the proposed gravel pit; however, the creek is dry and does not flow water.
The parcel of the proposed gravel pit provides habitat for multiple wildlife species throughout
the year. The proposed gravel pit falls within the concentration area and overall range for
mule deer; overall range for whitetail deer; overall range for pronghorn, the overall range
Heather Dugan,Acting Director,Colorado Parks and Wildlife of coto
Parks and Wildlife Commission:Carrie Besnette Hauser,Chair.Dallas May,Vice-Chair•Marie Haskett,Secretary•Taishya Adams Qwu§
Karen Bailey•Betsy Blecha•Gabriel Otero.Duke Phillips,IV•Richard Reading•James Jay Tutchton•Eden Vardy ' of
w..
