Red Creek Quarry Baseline Water Investigation Section 5

5-12
DRAFT for review purposes only. Use of contents on this sheet is subject to the limitations specified at the end of this document.

Figure 5-4. Flow rates from corrected transducer and staff gauge data
5.4 Water Quality Measurements
Baseline water quality data were collected during the period beginning in August 2022 through July
2023. This section summarizes the results of analyses to ensure the appropriateness of surface and
groundwater quality data for use in characterizing baseline quality and conditions.
Several water quality parameters were inadvertently not analyzed from both surface and
groundwater samples due to logistical issues with the laboratory during the first quarterly sampling
event. The omitted parameters are shown in Appendix H. Samples were submitted to a different
analytical laboratory for the remaining four quarterly sampling events to avoid this exclusion of data.
5.4.1 Data Validation
Baseline water quality data were subjected to data review, verification, and validation as detailed in
the QAPP (BC 2023a, Appendix 3.6). Data review included examining the data for correct and
complete recording, transmission, and processing. Data verification included evaluating whether the
data met completeness goals. Data validation included evaluating whether the laboratory data met
method, procedure, and contract requirements. Through these processes, data that were outside
acceptance criteria were qualified and flagged per U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
National Functional Guidelines for Inorganic Superfund Data Review (EPA 2013). Some data did not
meet all of the data quality metrics and were qualified. Data flagged as estimated with “J” qualifiers
were considered usable for the purposes of characterizing baseline conditions. Oil & Grease non-
detection results were flagged as rejected with “R” qualifiers based on the laboratory QA/QC
protocol. The laboratory protocol is to only analyze laboratory control samples when the target
samples have Oil & Grease concentrations measured above the method detection limit. Oil & Grease
measurements were below the detection limit (Appendix H) and therefore, the laboratory did not
conduct the laboratory control sample analysis resulting in the non-detect data being flagged
