Red Creek Quarry Baseline Water Investigation Section 3

3-12
DRAFT for review purposes only. Use of contents on this sheet is subject to the limitations specified at the end of this docu ment.
3.7 Surface Water Flume Installation
A surface water flow monitoring station consisting of a ramp flume designed to measure flow
between 0.1 to 3.5 cubic feet per second (cfs) was installed in August 2022 (Photo 3-3). The location
of the flume was selected based on a visual reconnaissance of the stream and the proximity to the
surface water seeps (Figure 3-4).

Photo 3-3. Surface water flume after installation
The flume measures the volume of water by creating an obstacle in the flow path of a known
dimension and shape. The head of water inside the flume throat was observed using the staff gauge
inside the flume (Photo 3-4) and using a pressure transducer installed within the plastic stand pipe
attached to the flume (Photo 3-5). The transducer is located on the downstream side of the flume
and is not affected by water that may pond on the upstream side of the flume. A port at the bottom
of the flume allows water to flow into the plastic standpipe with the transducer (Photo 3-4). The
transducer provides continuous flow monitoring by measuring shallow water levels using a pressure
sensor when submerged at a fixed level under the water surface. Visual observations of the water
level recorded by the staff gauge inside the flume were collected periodically by Holcim and BC
personnel.
