Use of contents on this sheet is subject to the limitations specified at the end of this docu ment. <br />3.2 Monitoring Well Installation <br />Five groundwater monitoring wells were installed both to the north and south of Red Creek in <br />November 2021 (Figure 3-2). The objective of the well locations was to assess the groundwater <br />elevations near the surface water seeps observed in the Red Creek drainage. The wells were located <br />upstream and downstream of the seep and within approximately 400 feet of the Red Creek canyon <br />edge. Wells were spaced to ensure the data collected from each well was spatially distributed in <br />order to characterize the hydrologic properties of the water bearing units. <br />The wells were drilled using an air-rotary drill rig and drill cuttings were continuously evaluated for <br />the presence of water (Photo 3-2). If signs of groundwater were observed, drilling operations were <br />stopped, and the hole was checked for the presence of groundwater using a water level meter. <br /> <br />Photo 3-2. Air rotary drilling operations for monitoring well installation <br />Four of the groundwater wells were completed in the Codell Sandstone and one well was completed <br />in the Fort Hays Limestone (Table 3-1). No water was encountered within the limestone at locations <br />Well 1, Well 3 and Well 4. Water was encountered in the sandstone below the limestone and <br />screened within the sandstone unit. Water was encountered within a suspected fault zone in the <br />limestone unit at approximately 34 feet below ground surface (bgs) during the drilling operations for <br />Well 2N. Well 2N was completed in the limestone unit, however, produced very little water. Well 2S <br />was drilled as a paired well to Well 2N and completed within the Codell Sandstone. The suspected <br />fault zone was observed at relatively the same depth during the drilling operations for Well 2S. <br />Monitoring wells installed within the sandstone were screened within the upper 5–10 feet of the <br />Codell. Wells were constructed using 2-inch polyvinyl chloride (PVC) well screens (0.101 slot), <br />10/20 sand, bentonite seals and grouted to surface. A bentonite seal was set in the well annual <br />space to hydrologically separate the sandstone from the overlying limestone unit. Surface <br />completions included a ~3-foot stickup, concrete pad, and three painted bollards per well. Well <br />completion logs are shown in Appendix A. The wells were developed using a combination of surging <br />and bailing. Pumping during well development was not possible due to the slow rate of groundwater <br />recharge.
