Responses to Objections 41
September 5,2023
17.Justin Fowler
13767 Highway 24
Leadville, CO 80461
4ustinfowler54(cDgmail.com
RE: Support of Proposed Amendment to the Leadville Mill Permit M1990-057
Mr. Fowler,
Thank you for taking the time to express the objections/concerns to our proposed amendment to our
Leadville Mill permit.
Obiection: The land and neighborhood is now a residential area and no longer suitable for milling or
mining. Why in the world would the Federal or State allow such activity after the 28 ac parcel we also own
was cleaned in the Super Fund!?? This makes zero sense to allow such cyanide activity near our water
wells.
The land East of your property has been zoned for Industrial and Mining activities for many years and
maintains this zoning today. The Mill was permitted and constructed around 1990. The permit is still
active (State-CDRMS M1990-057and Lake County CUP File 11-07). The mill is currently permitted to
process material using flotation methods, which do not require the use of cyanide. However, the mine
dumps considered for remediation require the responsible use of cyanide. The permit amendment
application currently under consideration by CDRMS is to amend the existing permit to allow the use of
cyanide. If the application to amend the permit is not approved, CJK will look at options to operate the
mill using its currently approved and permitted process technology.
To our knowledge, EPA has not performed any remediation activity in either your property or the mill site
property, although the area was studied by EPA.
CJK is available to meet with you and other stakeholders to discuss your concerns. Please do not
hesitate to contact us through the appropriate channels if you wish.
At CJK Milling,we are committed to transparency and stewardship. As a remediation company, our mission
is to help clean up the environment and we welcome any additional questions you may have.
Sincerely,
For CJK Milling Company
Nick Michael
Union Milling Contractors
cc: GKnippa, UMC Milling Company, LLC
SCraig, UMC
