ABSTRACT
At the request of Trapper Mining, Inc., Grand River Institute (GRI) conducted a Class
III cultural resources inventory for two mining tract areas (total 76.5 acres) located on State
and private lands in Moffat County, Colorado. The inventory was conducted by Carl E.
Conner, Principal Investigator and Field Supervisor, under State of Colorado Archaeological
Permit No. 81366. Conner was assisted by Natalia Conner and Barbara Davenport.
A files search was conducted through History Colorado’s Office of Archaeology and
Historic Preservation (OAHP). This review indicated that a section of previously recorded
historic liner site (5MF.5138) occurs in Area 2 of the project area and was revisited and
reevaluated. Fieldwork for cultural resources was performed on 9 May 2023. Besides the
above referenced site, no additional cultural resources were identified during the inventory.
Site 5MF.5138 is historic State Highway 13 and overall it has been deemed eligible for
listing on the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion A; associated with events
that have made a significant contribution to the broad pattern of our history. Activities of the
revisit included recording the segment within the study area as 5MF.5138.10, assessing its
condition and evaluating its significance. Since the historic road segment has been altered
significantly at this location, this portion of the resource lacks elements of integrity including
feeling, setting, materials, design and workmanship. Only integrity of the location and
association remains, as seen on historic GLO maps and quad maps. The proposed project will
alter the topography within the segment, however, since it has already been affected by
modernization (removal of asphalt), a new road bisecting the segment and reclamation work,
there will be no adverse effect to the resource. No further work is recommended.
ii
