STOCKPILE SAMPLING
Stockpiles I - 24 are identified on Figure I. Stockpiles 101 - 115 are identified on Figure 2. The following
stockpiles will be sampled using the methods outlined below: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 17, 20, 21, 22,
smaller gradation materials (less than I inch) in 109, and 113.The following stockpiles have either already been
visually evaluated and cleared as non-impacted or will be visually evaluated during the upcoming sampling event:
13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 23, 24, 110, 1 1 1, 112, and 115. Stockpiles that have been visually evaluated with data
presented in the June 23, 2023 Submittal of Observations and Findings, Inspection of Stockpiles with Material Larger
than 1-inch Diameter, prepared by Pinyon include 13, 14, 15, and 19. Stockpiles 16, 18, 23, 24, 110, 1 1 1, 112,
and 115 have not yet been visually inspected, but will be during the sampling event.
5-Point Composite Soil Sample Collection Method
Composite soil sampling will be used to evaluate stockpiles where sampling is required. The number of
composite samples collected from each stockpile will be determined by the stockpile size:
• Up to 1,000 cubic yards (yd3) - I composite sample. This includes stockpiles 2, 20, and 113.
• 1,000 yd3 to 10,000 yd3-2 composite samples. This includes stockpiles 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 16,
17, and 21.
• 10,000 yd3 to 100,000 yd3- 3 composite samples. This includes stockpiles I and 22.
• GFeateF than 100,0003
Each composite sample will include five aliquots. For the small (less than 1,000 yd3) stockpiles, 4 aliquot
locations will be selected on the sides and from the top to the bottom of the stockpile. For the larger stockpiles
(greater than 1,000 yd3), where more than I composite sample is collected, the stockpile will be segregated
into equally sized sections. For example, a 20,000 yd3 stockpile (in the 10,000 yd3 to 100,000 yd3 category)
would be divided into 3 equally sized sections. The sections will begin from the base of the stockpile and extend
to the top. In each section, 4 aliquot locations will be selected from the bottom to the top of the stockpile.
Aliquot samples will be collected from 0 to 12-inches below stockpile surface at each of these 4 locations.
The 5th aliquot for each composite sample will be collected with the assistance of an excavator. The excavator
will dig into stockpile/section as far as practical, without creating caving or collapse safety concerns, or without
affecting the integrity of other stockpile sections being sampled. The 5th aliquot sample will be collected from
the excavator bucket, from material that is removed from the interior of the pile.
From each aliquot location, one discrete soil sample will be collected. The sample will be placed in a 4-ounce
wide mouth glass sample jar and sealed. The jar will be labeled and temporarily held in cold storage. Once all
5 aliquots are collected, each jar will be dumped into a decontaminated metal mixing bowl and thoroughly
mixed/homogenized. From this mixture, the composite sample for that stockpile or stockpile section will be
collected.
Once collected, each composite sample will be labeled, placed in cold storage, and ultimately transported under
chain of custody documentation to the project laboratory, Origins Laboratory, Inc., located in Denver,
Colorado. The laboratory will analyze each composite sample for PAH/PCP COCs.
Origins and Waypoint will follow all applicable Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QA/QC) procedures, for
analysis of the COCs using the analytical methods summarized above in Table 1. The samples will be submitted
and analyzed within allowable holding times. The sampling will be initiated within 2 weeks of DRMS acceptance
of this Plan.
