Sample Packaging and Shipping
The following outlines the packaging procedures that will be followed. As a first choice, Pinyon will hand-deliver
the samples to Origins in Denver, Colorado. In the event samples cannot be submitted to Origins within three
days of sample collection, the samples will be shipped, via FedEx,from Salida, Colorado directly to the Origins
facility. The samples will be packaged as outlined below:
• Check screw caps for tightness and, if not full, mark the sample volume level of liquid samples on the
outside of the sample bottles with indelible ink
• Wrap all glass sample containers in bubble wrap to prevent breakage
• Seal all sample containers in heavy duty plastic zip-IockTM type bags. Write the sample numbers on the
outside of the plastic bags with indelible ink.
• Place samples in a sturdy cooler(s) within a larger plastic bag. Bubble wrap should be placed in the bottom
of the cooler to reduce the potential for breakage during shipment
• Ice used to cool samples will be double sealed in two zip lock plastic bags and placed on top and around
samples to chill them to the correct temperature
• Close up all samples and ice within the larger plastic bag and seal the plastic bag to prevent any leakage
• Fill empty space in the cooler with bubble wrap to prevent movement and breakage during shipment
• Enclose the appropriate chain of custody forms in a zip-lock plastic bag affixed to the underside of the
cooler lid
• Seal the drain plug of the cooler with sturdy tape to prevent melting ice from leaking out of the cooler
• For coolers being shipped, each cooler will be securely taped with sturdy packing tape, and custody seals
will be affixed to the front, right, and back of each cooler.
Disposal Of Residual Materials
Any residual soil material remaining after all sample containers are filled will be placed back onto the sampled
stockpile.
Documentation —Field Notes
Field notes will be recorded in accordance with Pinyon SOP — GEN00 — Field Notes (Attachment 1). At a
minimum, the following information will be recorded during the collection of each sample:
• Sample location and description
• Site or sampling area sketch showing sample location and measured distances
• Sampler's name(s)
• Date and time of sample collection
• Designation of sample as composite or grab/discrete
Mr. Lucas West Page 9
Environmental Protection Specialist
