Upon arrival at site, fill out the field notebook according to the Field Notebook SOP.
2. Prior to sampling, decontaminate all hand augers and reusable equipment.
3. Establish your sampling locations either in the field or prior to the site visit.
4. Measure the length of the hand auger from the bottom to the top. You may want to mark depths on the
handle of the hand auger. This will be useful for collecting samples at established depths.
5. Place the hand auger in a vertical position in the sampling location. Twist the hand auger in a clockwise
direction to the desired sampling depth.
6. Lift the hand auger from the sampling location, tip the auger bucket into a "Zip-IockTM" bag or
decontaminated stainless steel bowl.
o If sampling for volatiles and using a baggie, place approximately half of the sample into, then
seal the bag as soon as possible. Place the remaining half into a laboratory provided sample
container. After several minutes, screen the bag's headspace with a photoionization detector
or designated field screening instrument.
7. Describe the soil on the boring log or soil sample form. As soon as practical, the soil should then be
transferred to a laboratory provided sampling jar.
Soil Sample Collection with Hand Auger
December 23,2022
Page I of 2
