The purpose of soil sampling is to gather data
on the nature and extent of constituents present in surficial and subsurface soils at a site. Many of Pinyon's
projects include soil sampling and it is essential that the sampling of soils is completed in accordance with the
project scope of work (SOW) and Pinyon's standard operating procedures (SOPS). Potential problems with
soil sampling include cross contamination of samples; this occurs from improper decontamination techniques
and soil handling procedures. Proper soil sample collection procedures are necessary to obtain complete,
reliable data.
2.0 Procedure
The following procedures will be used for soil sample collection:
• Prior to beginning any subsurface work,a utility locate must be completed.Any utility lines on the property
must be clearly marked. First, contact the Colorado Utility Locator: www.colorado8l l.org and request
that underground utilities be marked. Second, communicate with the landowner or tenant, if possible, to
identify private underground utilities and other obstacles that only the landowner or tenant may know
about.
• Pinyon's health and safety plan should be reviewed with any staff and contractor on the job site prior to
sampling activities. Proper safety equipment should be worn depending on site conditions. Proper traffic
control, including a traffic control plan and permits, must be completed as necessary.
• Prior to the site visit to complete soil sampling, sampling equipment should be decontaminated and free of
dirt from previous projects. Decontaminating soil sampling equipment should be completed using a three-
bucket wash system with a phosphate free detergent; refer to Pinyon's SOP-SCREM04 for decontamination
of reusable equipment.
• Pinyon staff should establish hand signals with a machine operator if heavy machinery is being utilized for
soil sample collection (backhoe, drill rig, etc.). All on-site personnel should be aware of the hand signals,
and safety precautions should be established when working around the backhoe such as, do not approach
Soil Sample Collection
December 22, 2022
Page I of 6
