2.04.4 Cultural and Historical Resource Information
• There are no known cultural or historical resources listed or eligible
for listing on the National Register of Historic Places within the
permit or adjacent area of the TCC loadout facility. This conclusion is
based upon examination of files with the Colorado Historical
Preservation Office. Correspondence from this office is shown in
Exhibit 5, Cultural and Historic Resource Information.
Historical Resources
Historically the area around the proposed permit area has been used for
production of coal to support steel operations. In fact, the old
townsite of Bowie, Colorado, which is adjacent to the permit area housed
workers who worked at the Bowie Mine located north/northeast of the
permit area. The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad was constructed
during the early 1900's to serve the mining operations in the North Furk
of the Gunnison River Valley. Due to the location of the railroad in
• this area, several mining operations were developed. Specifically these
include the Bowie Coal Company, U.S. Steel's operations near Somerset,
Colorado, Bear Coal Company, Somerset, Colorado, and several other old
workings. Production of coal in the past has gone to utilities, cement
plants and miscellaneous industrial users. In addition, coal produced
was used for domestic heating and as coke in the steel making process
for the steel mills of Utah.
The railroad provided access and transportation for other people in the
IJorth Fork of the Gunnison Rivery Valley in addition to the coal mining
activity. This activity brought ranchers and farmers to the area and
allowed them contact with distant markets. Along with coal mining, the
main economic base during the past century has been ranching and
farming.
The permit area of TCC was not the location of any events important to
. the course of local, state or national history. In fact, there is
nothing historic about the permit area. If any artifacts or structures
2.04-5
