lOle--Torriorthents-Rock outcrop complex, steep. This map unit is
on upland sides lopes. Slopes are plane to slightly convex. Areas are
irregular in shape and are 1 to 65 acres in size. The vegetation is
mainly shrubs, fortis and grasses. Elevation ranges from 7,000 to 7,500
feet. The average annual precipitation is about 14 inches and the mean
annual air temperature is about 42°F.
This complex is about 50 percent Torriorthents and about 35 percent
Rock outcrop. The Rock outcrop occurs mainly as exposed bedding planes
throughout the map unit.
The Torriorthents map unit consists of shallow to deep, somewhat
excessively to well drained soils. They formed in residum and
colluvium derived from thinly interbedded layers of sandstone and shale.
The surface of the Torriorthen[ soil described is brown very gravelly
sandy loam about 10 inches thick. The substratum is pale brown
extremely gravelly clay loam about 7 inches thick. A paralithic contact
of highly weathered shale occurs at a depth of 17 inches.
Permeability of this soil is moderate. Available water capacity is
low. Effective rooting depth is 17 inches. Runoff is rapid and hazard
of erosion by both water and wind is moderate.
This unit is used for wildlife habitat and watershed.
The soils of this map unit provides a poor to unusable source of
topsoil to an average depth of 10 inches. High content of coarse frag-
men u, many rock outcrops throughout the unit and steep slopes are the
main limitations.

2-327
