1
26b-Rentsac moderately deep Variant very fine sandy loam, 10 to 29
percent slopes. This moderately deep well drained soil occurs on
sideslopes of ridges. It formed in residuum and from alluvium and
colluvium weathered from sandstone. Slopes are plane to slightly
convex. Areas are irregular in shape and are 1 to 5 acres in size.
The vegetation is a sparse cover of shrubs, forbs and grasses. Elevation
ranges from 6400 to 6900 feet. The average annual precipitation in
about 14 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 42°F.
Typically the surface is Light yellowish brown very fine sandy
loam about 3 inches thick. The substratum is light yellowish brown
and pale brown fine sandy loam about 25 inches thick. A paralithic
contact of weathered sandstone occurs at 28 inches. The soil is
calcareous throughout the profile.
Included in mapping this unit is about 5 percent Busby Variant
and about 5 percent each Rentsac Variant and Rentsac deep Variant.
Also included is about 5 percent soils similar in all other respects
to Rentsac moderately deep Variant except that they are finer textured.
Permeability of this soil is moderate as is available water
capacity. Effective rooting depth is 28 inches. Runoff is medium
and hazard of erosion by wind is moderate and by water slight.
This unit is used for wildlife and watershed.
The soils of this unit provide a good source of topsoil to an
average depth of 9 inches. The structureless infertile substratum
horizon below this depth is not suited as a topdressing medium.

2-298
