t
COBERLY VARIANT
The Coberly Variant consists of deep well drained soils formed
from alluvial and colluvial materials derived from sandstone and shale
with a component of aeolian material. They are located in upland basins
and on rolling uplands and have slopes of 0 to 49 percent.
Coberly Variant soils are similar to and occur near the
coarse-loamy, mixed, frigid Aridic Haploborolls of map unit 41. The
Aridic Haploborolls have mollic epipedons that are less than 16 inches
deep and coarse-loamy control section textures. They also occur near
Savage and Rentsac Variant soils.
Coberly Variant soils are classified as fine-loamy, mixed Pachic
Haploborolls.
This soil is a variant because it is deeper than the acceptable
range in depth for the Coberly Series and has a fine-loamy control
section texture.
Typical pedon of Coberly Variant sandy clay loam, 11 percent slope
is located within 408,000N, 1,418,000E and 411,000N, 1,422,000E.
All--O to 1 inch; brown (lOYR 5/3) sandy clay loam, very dark
grayish brown (lOYR 3/2) moist, weak fine granular structure; loose,
loose, nonsticky, nonelastic; neutral; clear smooth boundary.
A12--1 to 6 inches; brown (lOYR 5/3) sandy clay loam, dark brown
(lOYR 3/3) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm,

2-197
