The mission of Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is
to perpetuate the wildlife resources of the state, to provide a quality state parks system, and
to provide enjoyable and sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities that educate and
inspire current and future generations to serve as active stewards of Colorado's natural
resources. CPW has reviewed the proposed location for the new Roberts Gravel Pit and has
the following comments regarding wildlife.
The proposed gravel pit is located on portions of the Northwest Quarter and the Southwest
Quarter Sections of Section 9, Township 13 South, Range 42 West of the 61h Principle Meridian
in Cheyenne County, Colorado. The parcel is owned by Clifford R. Roberts. The proposed
gravel pit is 23.47-acres including roadway access and requires a Regular 112 Operation
Reclamation Permit.
The current (and use of the parcel for the proposed gravel pit is a mix of dryland farm ground
rangeland. The rangeland vegetation is dominated by shortgrass prairie species with a small
shrub component comprised mostly of sand sage (Artemisia filifolia Torr.). Dryland farm
ground and rangeland is located to the north of the proposed gravel pit, as welt as an
occupied residence. An irrigated center pivot and rangeland is located to the east of the
proposed gravel pit. Dryland farm ground boarders the proposed gravel pit to the south.
Rangeland boarders the proposed gravel pit to the west. Big Timber Creek runs through the
proposed gravel pit; however, the creek is dry and does not flow water.
The parcel of the proposed expansion provides habitat for multiple wildlife species
throughout the year. The proposed expansion falls within the overall range, concentration
Heather Dugan,Acting Director,Colorado Parks and Wildlife
Parks and Wildlife Commission:Carrie Besnette Hauser,Chair•Dallas May,Vice-Chair•Marie Haskett,Secretary•Taishya Adams
Karen Bailey•Betsy Blecha•Gabriel Otero•Duke Phillips,IV•Richard Reading•James Jay Tutchton•Eden Vardy
H-3
