Please be as specific
as possible.
Comment/Objection Narrative
I am strongly opposed to the reopening of the Leadville Mill in Lake County. In particular with regards to the use
of cyanide to process tailings, the disturbance and transportation of tailings from one location to another, the
risk of groundwater contamination, and the risk to the environmental health of the Arkansas River.
As a sportsman, and commercial fishing outfitter operating on the Arkansas River, I have grave concerns for
any possible exposure to deadly chemicals that could essentially kill the river and anything living in it.Since the
establishment of a Superfund clean up site in the 1980's to mitigate the decades of damage from mining in
Leadville, the Arkansas has undergone the most dramatic recovery of a fishery this state has ever witnessed.
The Arkansas river now encompasses 102 miles of Gold Medal class fishing, the highest classification for a
fishery in Colorado,as well as the greatest amount for any fishery in the state. It would be irresponsible to once
again expose the Arkansas river to that type of contamination. There have been decades of stream restoration
work and water treatment projects, costing millions of taxpayer dollars to clean up from past mining operations
in the Arkansas drainage. The risk of undoing all of that hard work is far too great for the minor amount of return
to a private corporation.Certainly the Gold King Mine waste water spill in 2015, is an example that things can
go terribly wrong even with a safety plan in place.
Any potential contamination to the Arkansas river could have serious consequences on the recreation industry
that thrives along the entire river corridor, through Lake,Chaffee and Fremont counties.According to the
Colorado River Outfitters Association, rafting and fishing guests spent around$74 million dollars in total
expenditures in the Arkansas River Valley in 2017. Due to this project being at the headwaters of the river, the
damage caused by some sort of catastrophic event could wipe out that entire industry for years, impacting
hundreds, even thousands of families reliant on a healthy river for their livelihoods.
The risk of the project is far too great and I urge the Division of Mining, Reclamation and Safety to deny the
application.
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M1977999, M1999777UG or C1981201.
M1990057
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
