Please be as specific
as possible.
Comment/Objection Narrative
Hello, I am writing to respectfully object to the 112(d)designated mining regular operations permit application
filed for use by CJK Milling Company. Specifically, they propose to expand their processing capacity, and want
to add the use of cyanide vat leaching. While I am not an expert in mining and environmental hazards, I
understand that sodium cyanide is an extremely toxic chemical that is so concerning that Summit County tried
to ban its use in mining in 2004,and it is only used in a few sites in Colorado. I looked through the
documentation provided on this site for CJK Milling's permit proposal here in Leadville,to see what
environmental hazard/mining/water science experts may have reviewed their application, and to see what they
had to say. I was dismayed to find a letter dated April 12th,2023,from the Leadville Sanitation District, who
owns and operates wastewater treatment facilities servicing Leadville and environs, expressing concern that
this proposed operation posed a hazard to water treatment operations, including increased stress on a
treatment process already made difficult by the pre-existing heavy metal contaminants from past mining
operations, and concern regarding the extreme amount of cyanide used(1,600 pounds a day),and the lack of
experience CJK Milling has in dealing with this toxic chemical. Further, there seems to be a letter from the Army
Corps of Engineers dated March 2nd,2023 saying they could not comment specifically on the process(I am
assuming because CJK Milling has not reached out to them directly)and if the activity has the potential to result
in discharge of filling into the water of the US,that CJK MIIIing need to work directly with the army corps to
obtain any necessary permits as directed by the Clean Water Act. It seems to this concerned citizen that,
because they cannot guarantee there won't be a leach/accident,they should reach out to the Army Crops and
obtain the necessary permits. While I am not a mining, environmental science,or water science expert, I can
see that CJK Milling has not done their homework, and this is unacceptable when dealing with a chemical as
toxic as sodium cyanide.Thank you for considering my perspective, and please make sure they do their
homework.Thanks Teresa
Permit Number*
Enter valid letter and then numbers, for example M1977999, M1999777UG or C1981201.
M1990057
Permitting Action Type
Select revision type or leave blank if comment pertains to a new permit application or NOI
