March 30, 2023 C-1980-004/McClane Canyon Mine CCW
FISH and WILDLIFE—Rule 4.18:
Throughout the inspection of the mine site, several sets of deer tracks and scat were seen.
HYDROLOGIC BALANCE -Rule 4.05
Drainage Control 4.05.1, 4.05.2, 4.05.3; Siltation Structures 4.05.5, 4.05.6; Discharge Structures 4.05.7, 4.05.10;
Diversions 4.05.4; Effluent Limits 4.05.2; Ground Water Monitoring 4.05.13; Surface Water Monitoring 4.05.13;
Drainage—Acid and Toxic Materials 4.05.8; Impoundments 4.05.6, 4.05.9; Stream Buffer Zones 4.05.18:
Two sumps are located at the west end of the mine office pad. One sump is located on the north side of
the haul road and the other is located on the south side of the haul road. The north sump was holding water during
the inspection(Photo 1). The sump was approximately 1/3 full. The silt fence at the outlet of the sump was in
good condition. There were no indications of instability or erosion. The south sump was also holding water and
was 1/4 full. The silt fence at the outlet was intact. There were no erosional features or indications of instability
observed.
There is one sediment pond located at the mine site (Photo 2). The pond is located east of the mine office pad and
west of the coal waste pile. During the inspection the pond was holding water. The level of water in the pond was
below the primary discharge outlet. The embankment of the pond was stable with vegetative cover. There were
no indications or erosional features. A blue PVC pipe was identified resting on the embankment of the pond. The
pipe was not connected to any discharge structure. Please move the pipe from laying on the embankment.
Three sumps are located along the haul road between the sediment pond and the mine portals bench. The first
sump is located on the north side of the haul road across from the sediment pond. The sump was holding a small
amount of water with no discharge occurring. The discharge outlet was clear of debris and stable. There were no
erosional concerns. The second sump is located on the south side of the haul road just east of the first sump
(Photo 3). The sump was observed to be about 2/3 full. No discharge was occurring from the outlet. The outlet
was unobstructed and stable. No erosional features were identified. The third sump is located further east from
the second sump on the north side of the haul road. A small amount of water was impounded in the sump. The
culver outlet was clear of debris and no discharge was occurring. The sump was stable with no indications of
erosion.
Two additional sumps are located at the portals bench. One sump is located southeast of the portals. The sump
was impounding a small amount of water at the time of the inspection(Photo 4). There was no discharge from the
sump occurring. The grate over the discharge outlet was unobstructed and stable. No erosional; features were
noted. The second sump is located to the north of the portals (Photo 5). This sump was also holding a small
amount of water. The grate on the discharge outlet was clear of debris and stable. There is some material in the
northeast corner of the sump that has slumped off the box canyon wall into the sump. This material was not
recently deposited in the sump and has been noted in previous Division inspection reports. The amount of
material does not affect the sumps functionality and will be cleaned from the sump when the sump undergoes
routine cleaning.
Diversion ditches that were unburied from snow were observed to be stable and in good condition. There were no
sections with blockages observed.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 0
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 3
Page 3 of 10
