IV. CONSTRUCTION SUMMARY
The request for Documented Quote resulted in 3 bids being received. The lowest bid was rejected by
Purchasing as being a non-responsible bidder, based upon unsatisfactory performance at Coal Basin in
1998. The Project was awarded to the lowest responsible bidder.
Contractor used back pack, ATV and Jeep mounted spraying equipment to treat approximately 25
discontinuous acres of noxious weed infestation. Species of interest included Canadian and Plumeless
Thistle, Oxeye Daisy and Hounds tongue. Tordon 22K was applied at a rate of 1 quart per acre. The Bid
package required that target species only be treated, with non-target species disturbed as little as possible.
Therefore, spot spraying of target species was required, creating a very labor intensive Project.
V. FUTURE MAINTENANCE
The Project area will need additional treatment in 2001 and, likely, 2002. Established monitoring points
(transects located on the Sutey Refuse Disposal Area, an open field north west of the Sutey, and on the
Overland Conveyor Corridor) should be monitored to help determine future needs.
The upper' of the central portion of the Old Refuse Pile will need additional, fairly aggressive treatment
in the future.
VI. SUMMARY
This Project was part of an on-going integrated weed management program at Coal Basin. Use of biologic
controls (goats)were also employed at some areas not chemically treated. On going treatment of target
species will be necessary in order to maintain the success realized by the past 3 years of treatment.
Coal Program vegetation experts should monitor the site for noxious weed growth at the established
reference areas.
Project Manager Steve Renner
Date 12-05-00
M:\imp\closeout\coalb00weed.doc
