receiving streams during snow melt, and potentially clogging the dips with loose soils, particularly during
the Spring of 2001.
Following ripping, the roads were seeded by hand and mulched using a blower. Mulch was stockpiled
along the margins of the roads prior to beginning earth work. Following scarification, the dozer towed a
38' two axle trailer, carrying the straw blower, to the top of the road. Straw was hand loaded onto the
trailer from the stockpile locations as the equipment moved down the road segments. The straw was not
crimped as this activity would detract from the roughening process. It was noted that, due to the extreme
scarification, a lot of the straw was captured in crevices and cracks created during the roughening process.
The major drawback of the process was that the dozer and trailer had to crawl up the road, turn and drive
back down the road. This created a slight track up the reclaimed roads, more from the trailer than the
dozer. However, the track is only surficialy compacted, and the number of dips built in the roads should
minimize the potential for gullying to occur in the `track'.
V. FUTURE MAINTENANCE
The road network should be carefully monitored during the summer of 2001 to determine whether erosion
is occurring on the road surfaces. The outlets of the rolled dips should be evaluated to see whether the log
structures were effective at distributing surface flows. Revegetation success should be evaluated in 2002.
VI. SUMMARY
This Project was intended to complete the reclamation of the remaining haul roads at Coal Basin. The last
remaining haul road(road A)is on private property, and will be left in its current condition. As specified in
a settlement agreement entered into by the Division,Mid-Continent Resources and MidCon LLC.
The Project was designed to minimize erosion potential from the road system, while promoting the post
mining land uses of wildlife habitat and non-motorized recreation.
Project Manager Steve Renner
Date 12-05-00
M:\imp\closeout\coalb00roads.doc
