Construction Summary
Many maintenance tasks were accomplished during the course of the construction season at Coal Basin under this
contract.
Roads B, C, D were reclaimed during the 2000 construction season. Observation of these roads following the 2001
snowmelt indicated that additional drainage control structures were needed on Roads B and D. Also, some of the
existing drainage structures were in need of upgrading to accommodate actual flows. This repair and construction
work was accomplished under the Spring Maintenance Contract.
Ditch 8, located at the south easterly margin of the Sutey Refuse Disposal Area, required additional energy dissipating
structures. These had been purchased in the fall of 2000. These structures, known as Georidge, were installed in the
spring of 2001.
Observation indicated that the Bear Creek Project area required minor erosion control maintenance. This was
accomplished using hand labor to choke gullies full of straw in order to reduce runoff velocities.
Silt fence was erected in various areas as required by the Storm Water Permits that the Division holds at the Coal
Basin Mine.
Miscellaneous junk, debris and trash was removed from the site, and hauled to the dump for disposal.
Roads B, C, D were re-seeded in the fall of 2001.
Small earth moving tasks, such as road-side ditch maintenance, maintenance of Ditch 1 at the west side of the Sutey
Pile, and contouring of a portion of the east side of the Facilities area was accomplished.
V. FUTURE MAINTENANCE
The entire permit area needs to be monitored at least three times per year: after spring runoff, in early August
following the beginning of the monsoon season, and in early September, following the end of summer rains.
VI. SUMMARY
This Contract was used to accomplish a number of miscellaneous reclamation and maintenance tasks at the Coal
Basin Mine. A similar contract should be awarded each year when no other large-scale Projects are scheduled, in
Drder to accommodate the maintenance needs of this formerly permitted mine.
Project Manager: Steve Renner
Date: November 26, 2001
b:\closeout.form
