Construction Summary
Only one Bid was received for this Project. The Bid amount was $22,000.00. Permission to negotiate with the low
bidder was received from Purchasing. The Project Manager and the Contractor visited the site via all terrain vehicles.
After evaluating access to the various work areas, the Contractor revised their Bid downward to $14,900.00.
From an herbicide application standpoint, this was a fairly labor intensive effort. Most of the herbicide was applied via
all terrain vehicle, or from backpack mounted sprayers. Further, the Bid required that a certain percentage of target
species within certain reference areas be killed, while minimizing loss of desirable species. Rate of pay was to be
adjusted if the number of target species killed was significantly below 90%, or if the number of non-target species
killed was high. All of these factors limited the number of Contractors willing to attempt this Project. However, these
requirements also eliminated those Contractors who were incapable of successfully completing a Project such as this.
The area of interest was about 20 non-contiguous acres located near the confluence of Coal and Dutch Creeks. This
includes portions of the Sutey Refuse Area, the Old Refuse Area, the Facilities Area and portions of Roads A and E.
Species of interest were Plumeless thistle, Canada thistle, Oxeye daisy and Houndstongue. Tordon was spot-applied
at an application rate equivalent to 2 quarts per acre active ingredient.
The Project appears to have been fairly successful. Visual inspection of the reference areas indicates a high
percentage of target species kill, with minimal loss of desirable species.
V. FUTURE MAINTENANCE
Another weed control project should be undertaken in 2002. Again, the area of interest will be focused on the facilities
area reclamation. Careful evaluation of the area by Division revegetation experts in the late summer of 2002 will need
to be accomplished. This evaluation will be the determining factor as to whether future weed control efforts are
necessary.
VI. SUMMARY
Approximately 20 non-contiguous acres were spot treated with Tordon. The kill rate of target species appears to be
high, while the kill rate of desirable species appears to be low. Another weed control project will likely be conducted in
2002 as a follow up to the 2001 application.
Project Manager: Steve Renner
Date: November 26, 2001
b:\closeout.form
