Construction Summary
A four wire barbed wire fence was constructed around the perimeter of the Bear Creek Project area. The area was
graded and revegetated in the fall of 1999. During the summer of 2000, cattle were grazed on the slope. The cattle
drastically reduced the effectiveness of the erosion control measures constructed on this steep slope. The cattle
significantly knocked down the track hoe divots constructed on the slope. They also grazed the seed heads from the
grasses which germinated during the summer of 2000. As a result, the Project Area erosion potential was increased,
while successful revegetation potential was decreased.
A total of 2,030 feet of fence was constructed in four days at a cost of$0.95 per lineal foot. The fence traversed two
steep slopes as well as the relatively flat top and toe of reclaimed slopes.
V. FUTURE MAINTENANCE
Cattle should be excluded from this area for at least two more growing seasons. The fence should be walked and
tightened following snow melt runoff, and by no later than June 20 of each year.
VI. SUMMARY
2,030 lineal feet of four wire barbed wire fence was constructed at the Bear Creek Project Area for the purpose of
excluding cattle from the area. Yearly tightening of the fence will be required.
Project Manager: Steve Renner
Date: November 26, 2001
b:\closeout.form
