Fourteen, approximately 12' long, pre-vegetated straw wattles were planted near the toe of the
mine 3 outslope. These wattles were pre-planted with willow cuttings, which were well rooted at
the time of planting. The location where these were planted is quite wet, and is the main
drainage path for the Mine 3 outslope drainage. These wattles were planted perpendicular to
the flow of the drainage. These willow wattles should become well established, and root well in
the place planted. These should provide very good sediment control by forcing sediment to drop
out of suspension as the water comes into contact with the willows. The willow wattles
themselves were purchased as part of a separate contract.
In order to move the plant materials and straw wattles into place, the previously reclaimed roads,
B, D, E and G were accessed by a four wheel drive pick up truck. Upon completion of other
operations, the impacted roads were scarified using the rippers on a dozer. Water dips and low
water crossings were upgraded as needed. In some instances, additional water bars were
created and additional upgrade work on existing dips was accomplished as p[art of longer term
site maintenance.
Finally, organic sediment control check dams were created in some gullies in the vicinity of Road
F about one half mile below Mine 3. Trees were felled and cut into workable lengths. These
materials were placed within the specified gullies at periodic distances for the purpose of slowing
water velocities, and to encourage deposition of sediment.
V. FUTURE MAINTENANCE
The slopes will be monitored according to a timetable and plan contained in the non-point
source grant. Monitoring will be accomplished for the purpose of determining vegetative cover
and diversity on the slopes, and for the degree of gully activity at each outslope. Inter-seeding or
re-planting of shrubs or trees may be required depending on the success rate of the materials
planted on the slopes.
VI. SUMMARY
A total of 16.6 acres were scarified and revegetated as specified. Additionally, 2,00 lineal feet of
straw wattles were installed, and 3,000 trees and 4,000 shrubs were planted. A substantial
number of organic check dams were installed in a severe gully system.
Project Manager: Steve Renner
Date: October 29, 2004
