The#2 Portal Backfill Area and access road were hand scarified to disrupt the slope surface and to create small shelves for
seed to germinate. The contractor worked around the existing vegetation of shrubs and grasses. The shelves are
approximately ten inches (10")wide and four inches (4")deep cut into the slope. The benches were constructed in an offset
pattern from the top to the bottom of the slope and were approximately one foot (1')apart. Once the areas were scarified,
Biosol Plus (7-3-3)was added at a rate of 800 pounds per acre and two tons of certified weed free mulch per acre was
applied. A total of 3 acres were revegetated.
The remaining disturbed areas were left in a rough state, seeded, fertilized and mulched. Seed was purchased from
Arkansas Valley Seed Company. All areas were hand seeded using the following seed mixture recommended by the Coal
Program:
SPECIES SCIENTIFIC NAME VARIETY PLS POUNDS PER ACRE
Rubber rabbitbrush Chrysothamnus 0.2
nauseousus
Fourwing saltbush Atriplex canescens Rincon 1.0
Shadscale saltbush Atriplex confertifolia 4.0
Western wheatgrass Agropyron smihii Arriba 6.0
Indian ricegrass Orypopsis hymenoides Paloma 3.0
TOTAL pls lbs./acre 14.2
The project was completed on October 28, 2009.
