Colorado Inactive Mine Reclamation Program
CLOSEOUT REPORT
BOND FORFEITURE PROJECTS
Introduction: The Two Brothers Shafts Project is located near the Gilpin/Clear Creek County line, up Virginia Canyon
north of Idaho Springs. The purpose of this project was to reclaim these hard rock mine shafts in accordance with the
approved mining and reclamation plan. The Bald Eagle Mine permit was revoked and the financial warranty was
forfeited on November 18, 1999.
Permit Information
Permit Number Operator Name Mine Name
M-1979-011 HR Virginia Canyon Joint Venture Bald Eagle Mine
Type of Mine—Metal Commodity Mined—Gold and silver
PRE-RECLAMATION SITE CONDITIONS
The Bald Eagle Mine was an underground gold and silver mining operation adjacent to the Two Brother's Mill. Mining at the
Bald Eagle Mine began in 1979. It appears, from the extent of the disturbance, that a significant amount of underground
development was done during this period, and possibly prior to lawful permitting. The total disturbed area of these two
shafts covers less than one (1) acre. The State of Colorado, Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety revoked the Bald
Eagle Mine permit and forfeited the bond in November of 1999. At the time this project began some mining-related debris
still remained onsite along with a modern shaft house. The shaft house was required to(and consented to) be demolished to
enable safe access to the existing shaft within. The site was photographically inventoried for posterity.
BIDDING/CONSTRUCTION INFORMATION
This site was reclaimed using State Severance Tax funds.
Type of Bid—Documented Quote
PO Number— Contractor Name&Address Construction Dates Bond Amount-$0.00
PKA-13-030 RMC Consultants
PO Date—1/22/13 12295 W. 48th Ave Start: 1/22/2013 Project Cost-$14,839.00
Wheat Ridge, CO 80033 End: 1/25/2013
CONSTRUCTION WORK DESCRIPTION
The intact shaft house building consisted of corrugated aluminum siding, wood and other building materials. It was located
on the same level as the mine access road making it readily accessible by excavator. Dimensions of the house were sixteen
(16')feet long by twelve and one-half(12.5')feet wide. The roof structure was angled and ranged from ten to fifteen(10,-15')feet
in height. The house was demolished and five trailer-loads were hauled off site to an approved landfill (Foothills Landfill). The
concrete foundation was left in place, and used as a foundation for panel placement.Three(E-1, 14'x 5') panels were used to
secure that shaft, and two sixteen-foot long, W-12 I beams were used to support the panel span. These I beams were inset
to the existing concrete foundation and grouted in place.
The lower shaft required two(D-1, 7'x 10') panels. Once the crew excavated a bench to bedrock, a slot was cleared by
jackhammer for the I beam.A 13' long W-12 I beam was installed to support the 2-panel span, and panels were laid to
overlap the bench by at least two feet on all sides.
Remaining Reclamation Requirements and Estimated Cost
INONE
1) M); 2)
Proje ag r Senior rfft Manager
za /3 zLc.)/13
Date Date
As of 05/14/09
