PROJECT: Sherman Mine Reclamation and Sherman Mine Regrading
Bond Number M-1986-141
Funding Sources—US BLM TO-26, Bond Forfeiture, and Severance Tax
I. PROJECT OVERVIEW
The goal of this project was to reclaim the Sherman mine site, located at an elevation of over
12,000 feet above sea level. The mine is located in Iowa Gulch, approximately 8 miles east of
Leadville on the west flank of Mount Sherman, one of Colorado's 14,000 foot peaks. The mine
had been idle for over 20 years, and the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board had revoked
the permit. The Landowner, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) requested that Colorado
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (CDRMS) contract for the reclamation of the mine.
CDRMS subsequently designed the project and solicited bids from interested contractors to
perform this reclamation.
The goal of the demolition phase of the project was to:
• Reconstructing approximately 300 feet of access road
• Re-establish the stream crossing
• Remove power poles and power lines
• Remove mine equipment, such as transformers and mine fan
• Safeguard the ventilation portal with 60 inch corrugated metal pipe and locking door
• Demolish all buildings, structures, foundations
• Remove all steel and debris
• Burn or haul off all timbers
• Safeguard an additional adit with 36 inch corrugated metal pipe and grated locking door
The goal of the regrading project was to return the mine area to its approximate original
appearance and slope. To this end, the successful contractor reconstructed the access road
and stream crossing, and cut and filled approximately 105,000 cubic yards of rock, then
reestablished the original stream channel.
Since this area receives public visitation, as one of the popular fourteener hiking trails passes
near the site, the contractor was advised to be careful of pedestrians at all times, post signs
explaining the project, and be prepared to interact with the public as they visit the site. The
contractor was required to control public access to the active work areas to avoid potential
hazards to the general public while providing access to the hiking trail.
One pre bid was held in June 19, 2007 for both projects. The Reclamation Project was begun
on August 21, 2007 and completed August 25, 2008, and the Regrading construction began on
August 13, 2008 and was completed on October 1, 2008.
II. LANDOWNER CONSENT
The bond forfeiture project was performed at the request of the Bureau of Land Management
(BLM) and by order of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board (CMLRB), using funding
from BLM, the reclamation bond, and severance tax. Landowner consent consists of the Board
Order, copy attached, together with the consent of the BLM.
