Closeout Report
Amarillo Mining Company
Wolcott Placer and Big Jake Mine
M-81-084
This site was inspected during June, 1999. Approximately 6 acres of disturbance was
found at the Wolcott Placer site. There was no obvious disturbance associated with the
Big Jake Mine property. The approximately six acres of disturbance included about
one acre of roads, 1 acre encompassed by a settling pond containing water, 1.25 acres
of vegetated disturbed area, and 2.75 acres of poorly vegetated disturbed area.
The disturbed area was being used as a shooting range and motorcycle/RV driving
area. Much of the unvegetated area consisted of piles of unconsolidated materials, and
two dry settling ponds. The settling ponds appeared to be stable. A topsoil stockpile
located on the west side of the pit was well vegetated with 15+ year old trees. In
consultation with the U.S. Forest Service, it was decided not to re-disturb this area, and
to not fill the dry settling ponds.
Most of the outslopes in filled areas were well vegetated. The settling pond containing
water is well vegetated and contains a reproducing population of Brook Trout.
Reclamation at this site was completed by Frontier Environmental Services, 770 Simms
Street, Suite 110, Golden, Colorado, using a backhoe and front-end loader. The piles
of unconsolidated material were graded to a gentler slope, barren cobbles were
covered, and the entire area was seeded and fertilized. The work was completed on
October 6 and 7, 1999. The total amount of money available for reclamation was
$2,375.00. $1,605 was spent on rental hours for regrading, fertilizer and seeding of the
site. The remaining $770 pays for the seed used at the site.
Per direction from the U.S. Forest Service, the site will continue to be used as a
shooting range and motorcycle/RV area, but there should be less erosion from the
steep side slopes.
Jim Herron
1-18-00
