Colorado Inactive Mine Reclamation Program
CLOSEOUT REPORT
ACTIVE MINE BOND FORFEITURE PROJECTS
Permit Information
Permit Number Operator Name Mine Name
M-82-197 Sens and Associates dba Stewart Mine or Jack Stewart Mine
Crystal Victoria Mines
Type of Mine- Underground and Open Pit Commodity Mined Gold, Silver, Lead , Zinc
PRE-RECLAMATION SITE CONDITIONS This site comprises some three acres of disturbed land, including a two and one
half acre shallow open pit located at an elevation of 12,100 Ft.,two open portals, several hundred feet of access roads, and
numerous waste dumps. No reclamation whatsoever had taken place at this site. The portals are open and dangerous, the
pit is eroding badly due to melt form the large amount of snow that accumulates in the pit during the winter months, and the
roads and dumps are in a similar condition. A large amount of mining trash, such as timbers, steel and plastic pipe and
empty 55 gal. barrels are scattered across the property. Two old cabins, approximately one quarter mile east of the mine, are
not part of the permitted area.
BIDDING/CONSTRUCTION INFORMATION
Type of Bid
(circle one) Formal - Bid as the Sens/J. The project was started again in August of 2000.
A 13 ton weight limit on the Forest Service bridge over Lake Creek, severely limited the size of equipment on the job. Using
a 450 John Deere cat, and HD-18 track loader, approximately 75%of the waste material was returned to the pit and graded
to approximate original contour. A 15-20 Ft. highwall was left on the southwest side of the pit. Melting snow revealed a large
trench in the floor of the pit, which required a change order, however it was an ideal place to bury all of the misc.trash from
the site. The portals were safeguarded, one with a bulkhead with access, the other with a grated adit door with a 6 inch drain
in the footer. A small amount of salvaged topsoil was used for cover on both the north and south ends of the pit. Saturated
soil and tundra made working conditions at the north end of the pit sloppy at best. The entire site, approximately 3 acres,
was fertilized with commercial ( 18-46-0), and seeded with the Alpine-Subalpine seed mix.
Remaining Reclamation Requirements and Estimated Cost
Aonitoring of plant and grass growth will be required for several years, also safeguarded adits should be checked for
vandalism.
