Whirlwind Mine Groundwater Characterization Report
5.2.2 Brushy Basin Chemistry
Water samples collected from the Brushy Basin include samples BM001-2 and BM001-3 from
borehole BM00-1, Monitoring Well W-1, and depending on groundwater mixing and sample
location, possibly from the Whirlwind Decline. Other water sources that exhibit similar chemistry
include the Packrat Mine and Rajah 49 Mine (Thornton Portal). Figure 8 shows water chemistry
from sources BM00-1-2 and BM00-1-3, the Whirlwind Decline, the Packrat Mine Pool, and the
Rajah 49 Mine to be similar and of a sodium-bicarbonate type. Water from Monitoring Well W-1
is also proportionally high in sodium but is more balanced in the anions of bicarbonate, sulfate,
and chloride.
Water chemistry from three samples collected from Brushy Basin intervals at Umetco's borehole
BM00-1 show chloride ranged from 9.1 to 9.6 mg/L and TDS ranged from 320 to 1700 mg/L.
Arsenic concentrations ranged from <0.003 to 0.011 mg/L and selenium concentrations were
<0.005 mg/L. Uranium concentrations for BM00-1 and BM001-3 samples were 0.006 and
0.015 mg/L, respectively. Vanadium concentrations were all <0.01 mg/L. One sample, BM001-
2, shows a result of 26 microCuries per milliliter(pCi/mQ radium-226. The same sample shows
a radium-228 result of 15 NCi/mL. These are extraordinary results for radium. Documents
associated with the Umetco borehole BM00-1 report stated that Umetco had mentioned that one
of the water zones tested had elevated radium and that this was considered "ore-bearing". The
gamma log for the borehole showed a kick in this interval and a much larger kick near the
bottom of the hole in the Salt Wash ore horizon.
Monitoring Well W-1 was completed in the Brushy Basin. Sampling from Monitoring Well W-1
began shortly after the well was constructed in 2008 and continued on a quarterly basis through
2009. Semi-annual sampling was done in 2010 and annual sampling from 2011 to the present.
Common ion chemistry was plotted on Figure 10. This source shows good consistency with
other Brushy Basin sources in cation chemistry with a high proportion of sodium. However,
anion chemistry is less consistent and generally is restricted to a modest range, showing
approximately 40% to 50% bicarbonate, and about 30% sulfate and 30% chloride. The overall
water type is sodium-bicarbonate-chloride-sulfate. The water chemistry of Monitoring Well W-1
has the highest concentrations of common ions. Chloride concentrations range from 113 to
174 mg/L and TDS concentrations range from approximately 700 to 944 mg/L. Monitoring Well
W-1 water has several constituents that exceed state water quality standards for groundwater
Western Water& Land, Inc. 29
