Whirlwind Mine Groundwater Characterization Report
• Depth to water measurements should not be interpreted as static, but, in most cases,
indicate that groundwater is present in the strata above the Salt Wash Member (this
assumes that holes were purged dry of most injection water before measurement); and
that this groundwater is associated with sandstone units in the Brushy Basin Member.
• Only two holes (2 and 11) began injection at a shallow depth (less than 200 ft). This
indicates that the Burro Canyon aquifer is not a prolific hydrostratigraphic unit in this
area of Beaver Mesa.
• Four holes (1, 3, 4, and 7) showed injection occurred at some depth below the upper
Brushy Basin sandstone unit but above the lower sandstone unit. The upper Brushy
Basin sandstone can be interpreted as water-bearing in these holes (or groundwater
occurs at some depth above the lower sandstone unit).
• Four holes (6, 10, 12, and 13) showed injection at a depth below the lower Brushy Basin
sandstone. This indicates that the upper Brushy Basin sandstone is not a widespread
prolific hydrostratigraphic unit in this area of Beaver Mesa.
4.2.1.6 PR Spring and Packrat Mine
WWL was not able to access the Packrat Mine for this study in adherence of state and federal
agency protocols during temporary cessation. Therefore, WWL relied on historical information
related to the mine, much of which was included in the mine permit.
U.S. Environmental Services, Inc. (USES) on behalf of Umetco, conducted an evaluation of the
hydrologic relationship between the Packrat/Hubbard Mine and PR Spring using data collected
in the 1990s and 2000. This was done to support a request by the Colorado Department of
Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) related to discharge permitting at the mine and spring
sites.
USES described the geology of the PR Spring and Packrat Mine area. The mine is in the upper
part of the ore-bearing sandstone of the Salt Wash Member and is stratigraphically separated
Western Water& Land, Inc. 20
