Whirlwind Mine Groundwater Characterization Report
seepage points maintained a thin film of free water on the rock surfaces that resulted in drips in
places, but no distinct running rills were observed.
4.2.1.3 Cotter Exploration Drill Holes
Cotter conducted an exploratory drilling project on their Liberty Claims prospect in the summer
of 1996. The Liberty claims are located between the west-trending drift at the bottom of the
Whirlwind Decline, and the western-most workings of the Packrat Mine, on top of the mesa just
west of the Whirlwind Decline portal (see Figure 2). This area is also the same general location
of Borehole BM00-1 (Lots 3 and 4, Section 35, T. 51 N., R.20W., N.M.P.M.). Of the seven holes
drilled, one (JB-96-1) encountered groundwater in the Burro Canyon. The other six holes
encountered groundwater in the Brushy Basin. Recognition of this groundwater was based on
the depth the water was first encountered. This is because exploration holes were not cased
and groundwater encountered at deeper depths frequently cannot easily be distinguished from
the initial shallow groundwater. Groundwater encountered at deeper depths will commingle with
the shallower groundwater. The results of the drill hole groundwater observations are
summarized in Table 1 (Cotter, 1996).
Cotter collected one groundwater sample from drill hole JB-96-2. These data are discussed in
Section 5.0 (Water Chemistry) of this report.
4.2.1.4 Umetco Test Hole BM00-1
In September of 2000, Umetco drilled Boring BM00-1 to a depth of 560 ft to investigate
groundwater occurrence and quality in the Burro Canyon Formation and the Brushy Basin and
Salt Wash Members of the Morrison Formation (see Figure 2). The boring location was located
on Beaver Mesa near the Utah state line (SW1/4 Section 35, Township 51 North, Range 20
West, 6th Principal Meridian). This location was selected because of reports of groundwater in a
Cotter exploration hole JB-96-2, located 10 ft. to the north of BM00-1. In particular, the
background radiologic parameters of the Salt Wash groundwater were of interest in the
investigation. Umetco's report of this investigation is included in Appendix C of both the DRMS
mine permit and BLM plan of operation.
Western Water S Land, Inc. 17
