Slope Stability Analysis
A slope stability analysis was performed using GALENA Slope Stability Software, assuming the
ground conditions described in the DRMS permit. The mining plan calls for slopes along the edge of
the permit area to be mined to the final condition of 3HAV. The model assumes no topsoil or
overburden as the final slope will be mined to, not backfilled. The strength of the in-place sand and
gravel will determine the stability of the slope. The water table is identified in the mining plan of the
existing permit as being below the bottom of the fully mined out pit and is thus placed below the
model bottom. The material used in the slope stability analysis is sand and gravel- mixed grain size
for the aggregate The material properties for these two materials are shown in Table 2 below.
Table 2—Material Properties
DepositAggregate
Doa# to sand and gravel,mixed
rain size
Unit Weight(lbs/ft') 110
Frlcti m Ark&(° 45
Cohesion 0
*Material information is from the SME Mining Reference Handbook(2002 Edition).Values used are the lowest of any
ranges.'
Using these conditions, the failure slopes for the final mining and reclaimed slopes were determined
using Bishop's Method of Slices to identify the circular failure at various factors of safety (FOS).
