Cultural Resource Review and Reconnaissance Survey for the Fairmeadows RV Storage and Gravel Mining Pit
Project, Greeley, Weld County, Colorado
Farmhouses and outbuildings line a driveway that trends north from where it intersects East 8th Street at
the southwest corner of the parcel(Figure 5).These houses are on the north edge of the terrace where it
meets a fallow field(Figure 6)and on the low rise of the next terrace north. Soils are poorly sorted
alluvial sediments consisting of cobbles, gravels, and sand(Figure 7).Topsoil is generally absent in the
project area and specifically at the buildings. The residential area has been used as rental housing into
recent times and the area kept clean and free of trash and debris. No historic dumps or artifacts(no purple
or other glass, ceramic,or metal debris, or miscellaneous building materials)are on-site. Storage piles on-
site contain only cut cottonwoods from recent drought die-off events that intensified after 2012,based on
Google Earth(2022)historic aerial imagery.
The property currently has four residences with the addresses of 1507, 1515, 1519,and 1539 East 8th
Street, with the address numbers increasing from southwest to northeast following the terrace edge. The
brick house at 1539 East 8th Street appears to be the oldest and is likely the original farmhouse built
around the turn of the twentieth century. This house is outside the gravel mining pit area but is adjacent to
the proposed RV storage area. Its outbuildings and enclosed porch addition are wood-framed in a manner
similar to the house immediately to the southwest. The house at 1519 East 8th Street likely represents a
later expansion of the original farm complex,ca. 1938, according to Weld County Assessor records(Weld
County 2022b),which is consistent with the building style.
ML....
Figure 5.
