Cultural Resource Review and Reconnaissance Survey for the Fairmeadows RV Storage and Gravel Mining Pit
Project, Greeley,. Weld County, Colorado
ever since. The house does not present significant or masterful architectural elements of design or
materials. The house has had incongruous changes and additions made, including additions that distort its
shape and mass, replacement window openings, and changes to the siding and entry openings. The
property lacks significance and integrity under any NRHP criteria.
5WL9412 — 1519 East 8th Street
SWCA newly recorded 5WL9412,a historic farmstead at 1519 East 8th Street, consisting of a house
(Feature 1),garage(Feature 2),concrete block outbuilding(Feature 3),Quonset but(Feature 4),worker's
cottage(Feature 5),and concrete building foundation(Feature 6). The house at 1519 East 8th Street will
be left in place and kept as an employee residence for the project;however, the outbuildings on the
property may be removed.
Feature 1 is currently the only occupied residence in the series of houses on the project property(Figures
12 and 13).Based on Weld County records, the house was built in 1938,and its construction is consistent
with that assessment. The house at 1515 East 8th Street(5WL9411)was also built in 1938.The house is
now on an L-shaped footprint but appears to originally have been built rectangularly. An entryway wing
on the southeast corner appears to be a later addition,as does a westward extension on the front of the
main body of the house. The horizontal wood siding on the exterior walls appears to have been replaced
throughout the building. The front(south)windows have all been replaced with more recent casement
windows, whereas the side and rear fagades retain double sash wood-framed windows. The roof is hipped
on the east side,front-gabled over the entry wing, and end-gabled over the west fagade.Roof shingles are
new gray asphalt;however, the adjacent garage(Feature 2)has older wood singles.A single brick
chimney is centered on the roof. The eaves have exposed rafters. The foundation and porches are
concrete.A crawl space opening is apparent at the front of the building. The door at the original front
entry appears to be a recent replacement, although the door in the added entry wing appears to be older
and original.
Feature 2 is a garage immediately on the west side of the house(see Figures 12 and 13). The rectangular
end-gabled single-bay garage is wood framed, like the house. However, its siding appears to be the
original wood planks, and its wood roof shingles also remain. It has a double-entry door of vertical wood
planks on its front fagade(south). The rear(north)of the garage is composed of concrete blocks where it
is built into the earth slope behind it. The concrete blocks have triangular support sections flaring from the
base where the garage faces the slope. In front of the garage is a new, prefabricated garden shed,
constructed to look like a small red barn. Similarly,a new small red barn—style chicken coop is located on
the east side of the house.
14
