Lupton, CO 80621
RE: Fair Meadows Pit—Groundwater Evaluation
Dear Mr. York:
The proposed Fair Meadows gravel pit mine is located approximately 2 miles east of Hwy 85 in
Greeley, Colorado in Section 3, Township 5 North, Range 66 West (6th PM). The site is located
approximately 1000 feet north of the Cache la Poudre (Poudre) River. Figure Al shows the site,
and approximately 122 permitted wells located within approximately 1.5 miles of the site.
As part of the mine permit application process, the mine consultant, J&T Consulting, Inc. (J&T)
requested that McGrane Water Engineers,LLC.(MWE)determine the potential impacts of a slurry
wall around the proposed Fair Meadows pit. Impacts typically include a rise in the water table on
the up-gradient side of the slurry wall and a decline in the water table on the down gradient side.
Water level increases to within 10 feet of the surface on the up-gradient side of the pit could also
cause flooding of low lying structures such as basements. A decline in water levels on the down
gradient side could reduce the aquifer saturated thickness and well yields if the decline is
significant as discussed below.
GROUNDWATER INVESTIGATION
To evaluate the groundwater impacts, we:
1. Conducted a literature search of existing published groundwater literature in the vicinity of
Greeley, Colorado;
2. Compiled well data from the State's Well database (CDWR, 2022) including: well name,
permit number, location, well depth, depth to water, and pumping rate (Table Al);
3. Compiled well data from a geotechnical evaluation conducted by CMT Technical Services
dated September 23, 2022 (Appendix B)
4. Evaluated compiled monitoring well water levels taken around the pit by J&T which shows
the seasonal water level fluctuations are approximately 2-4 feet (Table A-2);
5. Evaluated seasonal water level changes observed in 15 registered wells over the past two
years (Table A-3);
6. Created a groundwater model to evaluate potential changes in groundwater levels resulting
from a slurry wall around the mine; and
7. Prepared this letter report which includes numerous figures that characterize the aquifer
and support the results.
