These sites were also monitored during mining from
2001 -2002 and after mining terminated in 2002, these sites continued to be monitored for
five years (2002 - 2008). This section compares pre- mining (1996 -2000) water sample
data with data collected post - mining (2002- 2008).
Coal bed methane (CBM) wells were and continue to be installed through out the region.
In the process of developing these wells, groundwater produced from the CBM
production target zones is discharged to surface waters. It is thought that these discharge
waters are the likely cause of changes in surface and alluvial groundwater quality within
the water monitoring area. The logic supporting this assertion is developed in the
sections to follow.
Surface Water
Surface water was monitored during the Pre and Post Mining periods along the
Purgatoire River and Lorencito Canyon Drainages. PRGTY -1 is the monitoring site
upstream from mining influence; PRGTY -2 is located downstream of the mine site and
just below the confluence with Lorencito Canyon. Table 2.05.6 -168 provides a
comparison of water quality collected Pre- Mining and Post - Mining for these two sites.
Likewise sites LC -2 and LC -1 are respectively located upstream and downstream of the
potential impacts from mining. This data is shown on Table 2.05.6 -16b.
TR -16 Page 2.05 -106 (Revised 10/27/09)
