2.05.3(2) Operation Description - Permit Area
Underground coal mining operations began in the permit area in 1899 and have
run intermittently until the present time. Operations using current mining methods
began in 1974. From 1974 to 2022, approximately 242 acres of surface lands were
disturbed in conjunction with mining operations. No disturbance of additional surface
lands during the life of the permit is planned. Exhibits 6A through 11A, 13C, 51 and
52, Tab Section 13, and Figure 14-17, Tab Section 14 shows the location of each
disturbed, or approved disturbed, surface area and Table 13-1 describes the buildings
and structures in each area. In the period from 1974 through 1999, a total of 3,523
acres were affected in conjunction with underground mining activities. Table 12-1
presents areas disturbed to date. Table 12-2 presents the acres affected by the North
and South Portal workings through 1999. The underground mining sequence and
aerial extent of affected lands is depicted in Exhibit 5 and Appendix 12-2. A
significant portion of the above described affected acres have been released by SL-3
through SL-11 from 2008 through 2020, leaving a total of 0.4 acres affected within the
permit boundary. The new permit acres are presented in Table 3-7.
Mining ceased at the Roadside Portals on December 2, 1999. The North Mine
was sealed during January and February 2000. The Roadside South Mine was sealed
during April 2000.
C-SEAM EXPLORATION
In September 1999, all C-Seam coal production was halted after a decision to
suspend the operations of the mine was made. Better quality coal and better mining
conditions found in the Cameo B Seam retreating section allowed the operator to mine
coal at the most efficient levels during the months leading up to the suspension.
The following is a summary of the rationale for mining the C-Seam, the
conditions found while mining and the mechanism employed in the mining of the C-
Seam.

RN-08 12-3 Rev 09/22
