The 6th Ave Borrow Pit is a 11 lc permitted site. The 6th
Avenue Pkwy Borrow Pit is located approximately 250 feet west of the intersection of East 6th Parkway and
Valdai Street and situated on the northwest corner in Aurora CO. Gregg Leggot and Jason Kidston
represented SEMA Construction, who operates the pit and accompanied Robin Reilley of The Division on
the inspection.
The mine identification was in place and in compliance with Rule 3.1.12. The sign is located at the entrance of
the site to the south. The affected area boundary markers had been removed as Arapahoe County requested as
the County accepted the vegetation reclamation. SEMA Construction agreed to provide the Arapahoe County
letter regarding this topic. The permit boundary runs along 6th Avenue to the south and Valdai Street to the
east encompassing about 29.16 acres. The Permit boundary was fenced. The 2022 Annual report appears to be
the original annual report of 2018.
The site, having been reclaimed, was inactive at the time of the inspection. However, there were signs of
machinery having driven on the site and a new berm had recently been constructed to support silt fencing
along the 6th Avenue parkway. A notice of a public hearing for a neighborhood association was posted. The
site is surrounded by rangeland and the post-mining land use is stated as rangeland. According to the annual
report map, the land owner is Aurora One Real Estate LP.
The site has been reseeded and has vegetation establishing in most areas. The soil was dry. The northern
portion of the site was reseeded in approximately the autumn of 2021. A swale had been installed to prevent
ponding at the request of the City. The swale appeared mulched, crimped, and seeded, with vegetation
established at the time of inspection. Native vegetation, seeded grasses and annual weeds are growing at the
site. There are some bare spots throughout. It is recommended that the operator continue to spray to control
weeds, as they have done in previous years. The area has been graded to 3H:1V slopes or shallower where
mining has occurred.
With the exception of a metal container located in the northwest portion of the site,no equipment or fuel is
stored on site. No problems or violations were noted during this inspection. DRMS suggested that the
operator request release of the site.
Responses to this inspection report should be directed to: Robin Reilley at the Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety, 1313 Sherman St., Room 215,Denver, CO 80203.
