INTRODUCTION
The Delta Paving Gravel Pit is located to the northeast of the intersection of Colorado State
Highway 92 and State Highway 65 just south of Orchard City, Colorado. The pit is located
directly to the south of the Gunnison River. The permittee and operator of this project is Grand
Junction Pipe & Supply Co. The Delta Paving Gravel Pit has been mined by several different
companies since 1999 under the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety
(CDRMS) permit# M-1998-105. Mining at the site is currently ongoing and portions of the site
are partially reclaimed. The final land use of the property is multiple groundwater lakes
surrounded by rangeland. The purpose of this amendment is to expand the permit boundary to
include the parcel between the current site and CO-65 and address the mining and reclamation
of the site. Additionally, the use of concrete, asphalt, and wash plants will be included in the
operation. The expansion area being added is currently agricultural fields with a site access haul
road to the current mining area through the center. The new permit and affected area will be
approximately 145 acres.
The Delta Paving Gravel Pit currently has approximately 60 acres of disturbance and 15.6 acres
of groundwater ponds previously reclaimed. Two portions in the southeast of the original permit
area are currently being used as agricultural fields. The area in the north by the Gunnison River
is currently undisturbed as woodlands and wetlands. This area was included in the original
mining plan but will not be mined in the future as it is partially within the floodway.
The land being added to the permit is directly to the west of the current site. Directly to the north
is the Gunnison River, to the west is CO-65, and to the south is a residence, open agricultural
fields, and a few agriculture-related structures. The area added in the west is currently being
used as agricultural fields with a haul road through the center for access to the Delta Paving site
to the east. The northern portion of the site is wooded area near the river.
The site will consist of four mining areas with access from Colorado State Highway 65.
Construction sand and gravel mining and processing will occur on site. Asphalt and concrete will
be produced on site as well.
Delta Paving Gravel Pit Lewicki&Associates
September 2022
