12. Contact thin dirty weathered coal/surficial deposits: surficial
material cot~osed of weakly stratified and sorted subangular granule
to cobble sized medium to coarse grained feldspathic to arkosic
sandstone clasts in a light brown calcareous sandy soil matrix; Raton
Fm lithologies in addition to coal include: tan, very fine grained to
silty, thinly bedded, limonitic sandstone; soft, brown, argillaceous
mudstone to siltstone with variable silt content; dark gray to black,
thinly bedded carbonaceous shale.
13. SURFICIAL: very crudely stratified to poorly stratified subangular
pebble sized medium to coarse-grained sandstone clasts in a light
brown sandy soil to sand matrix, slightly calcareous with locally
heavy areas; upper 3' of section exposed in cut non-stratified pebble
to boulder sized angular sandstone colluvium with caliche crusts;
bedrock outcrop 50' east ca~osed of buff, fine to medium grained,
moderately well sorted feldspathic sandstone with low to moderate
cross stratification and occasional soft sediment deformation
features; overlain by interbedded very fine grained sandstone and
siltstone.
14. Undifferentiated Raton Fm of following lithologies:
Shale to Claystone: brownish-gray, soft, slightly silty, locally
carbonaceous, poor fissility, fine when trenching.
siltstone: grayish-brown, moderately hard, argillaceous, sanewhat
friable due to weathering.
• Sandstone: tan, fine grained, subangular, feldspathic; massive 1.5'
bed, hard, poor porosity and permeability.
TRENCH SECTION: Trench cut normal to slope
Side Section as follows:
2.0' Brown sandy soil, increasirg sand content with depth.
2.8' Weakly stratified and sorted subrounded pebble to cobble-sized
sandstone clasts in a very coarse grained to granule sand matrix;
pockets and lenses of granule to small pebble gravel at irregular
basal contact show fair sorting; upper 0.8' has caliche - coated
clasts, local calcium carbonate at base; generally deficient in clay.
3.0' Very poorly sorted and non-stratified angular to subangular pebble and
occasional cobble sized sandstone clasts in a sandy clay martix;
occasional rounded clasts.
1.4' Light brown sandy clay - rich horizon, somewhat cohesive, will not
aggregate.
No H2O or bedrock encountered.
Up-Slope Section (end):
3.2' Dark to light brown soil, decreasing in clay and organics with depth;
occasional round pebbles toward base.
1.5' Light brown sandy soil with calcium carbonate staining.
4.7' Same as previous 3.0' interval on side, occasional poorly sorted
areas.
• 1.4' Sandy clay - rich horizon, as before.
