These included William McKenzie’s (1982) Mountain to Mill: The Colorado and
Wyoming Railroad, an article in the Journal of Metals (DeBoer 1953), and the Colorado Fuel and Iron
Company’s (CF&I) newsletters entitled Camp and Plant (CF&I 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904). These resources
provided valuable information about the history of the railroad grade and its associated features.
However, no other cultural resources were identified in these archival resources that were not already
identified using Compass.
2.2 Expectations
Site records and other information on Compass suggested that two of the four sites in the ROW—
5LA.1452 and 5LA.1472—had been completely destroyed after 1960 by the relocation of the C&W after
the construction of the Trinidad Lake Dam. This was also the case for another site that was only partially
intersected by the ROW: 5LA.1522. Additional review of the site records for sites that partially intersect
the ROW indicated that—while the site boundaries may cross the ROW—there were no features or
artifacts within the ROW.
After reviewing all data from the background research, Arcadis formulated these four research goals:
1. To fully document and thereby create one cohesive record for 5LA.7112 (C&W railroad grade)
and all its associated features (i.e., culverts and through-truss bridges).
2. To relocate and document two other sites that were likely to still exist within the ROW: 5LA.5913
(C&W Railroad Depot) and 5LA.9878 (Martinez and Medina Ditch).
3. To confirm that three other sites in the ROW that had been previously determined to be destroyed
were, in fact, destroyed, and that no evidence of them remained (i.e., 5LA.1452, 5LA.1472, and
5LA.1522).
