Pete Lien &Sons, Inc. has not recommenced operations because we are still looking for a high value use for the chemical grade limestone at this quarry.
Historically, lime was produced from this site for the smelters and mines in the Leadville area.
Limestone this pure also has many other uses such as calcium feed supplement for livestock, rock dust for coal mines and pH remediation for soils with a low pH.
The most recent sales from this quarry were to the Leadville area along the Arkansas River to raise the pH levels in the soil to acceptable level.
Because of the potential for supplying these markets,we are hesitant to reclaim the site prior to exhausting all options.
Mining permits like this are also difficult to obtain, making them a valuable resource that warrants keeping them open.
Our Rifle Quarry, Permit No. M-1985-038,was actually very similar to this operation. We tried for many years to develop a market for it but we were ultimately unsuccessful.
In the end, it was reclaimed with an innovative use of pond sludge from the Rifle Falls Fish Hatchery and was approved for full surety release on June 14,2021
Pete Lien&Sons recognizes the fact that this quarry must be reclaimed if we cannot put it in to operation at the end of this second,five(5)period of temporary cessation.
We are commited to honoring our obligation to either reclaim this quarry or make it operational and have a proven record for either operating a quarry or reclaiming it.
Therefore,we ask for consideration to grant a second, five year term for Temporary Cessation.
