The density of tests over a given day's
surface will be twice the original number of tests per square foot. This will allow good representation for
weather and changing conditions to insure proper compaction. CIVIC, Stantec, and BCC are comfortable
with the thicker lifts, and there will be the same compaction effort with a smaller footprint each day to cover.
The thicker lifts should not preclude larger rocks from being used in the fill, and CIVIC also requests that the
fill specification be revised to include rocks up to 24 inches in diameter.
In summary, CIVIC is seeking approval from the Division to allow compact fill at maximum 24-inch-thick lifts
with rocks up to 24 inches in diameter. CIVIC does not plan to change the required testing parameter of one
test per 5,000 cy placed.
Sincerely, PP
-P.E.
