South Hinsdale Response to Objections
12 July 2022
(4) Objection: viewshed—lifelong scenery damages See Section 5.4.2 and 5.5.2.
(5) Objection: location — "one of the most used recreation locations in the area" See
Section 5.1
(6) Objection: traffic — trucks through downtown Pagosa Springs See Section 5.3. This
proposed project will most likely reduce truck traffic through downtown, as compared to
past supply of gravel coming from the Weber pits north on SH-160. It will also reduce truck
traffic on SH-160 between Pagosa Springs and Lake Capote, by replacing at least some
materials now coming from Arbo/es, Ignacio, and Durango areas.
(7) Objection: air quality — dust (including obscuring views) from traffic and pit See
Sections 5.3.5, 5.4.3, 5.8, and other response regarding viewshed.
(8) Objection: noise — heavy machinery and trucks See Section 5.7.
(9)Objection: safety—road safety with increased traffic and gravel production on dirt roads
and through town See Section 5.3.
3.20 Glenda McDowell
Taylor Unit 2? See Section 3.12 Gene and Lisa Gamber
List of five (5) objections.
(1)Objection: location —heavy travel on Piedra River Trail and traffic on Piedra Road See
Section 5.3. Please note that there will be NO traffic from this proposed operation on the
Piedra River Trail unless the trail itself is being maintained or repaired. This is in
accordance with USFS regulations.
(2) Objection: noise — "extreme quiet and beauty ... to be blighted" See Section 5.7.
Measurements of sound generated by existing traffic on Piedra Road(including log trucks,
cattle trucks, USFS vehicles, rancher pick-ups and trailers, tourist RVs and vehicles with
trailers, and commercial delivery vehicles frequently exceed State noise levels of 55 dBA
as measured from the proposed pit location and other points. See also Section 5.4.2.
(3)Objection: road conditions—"already nearly destroyed by the logging trucks and cannot
be properly maintained with the additional traffic and extreme wear caused by gravel
trucks. The proper maintenance of roads to accommodate existing traffic, including
logging trucks, requires gravel which requires delivery by gravel trucks. Such maintenance
is a constant process, and more maintenance can be done if materials are readily and
economically available. See Section 5.3
(4) Objection: water quality—could negative affect watershed See Section 5.2
(5) Objection: wildlife — could kill fish (and general harm to environmental aspects of the
river corridor) See Sections 4.2 and 5.6
3.21 Brook*Lindner
435 S 10th Street, Pagosa Springs
List of one (1) suggestion and two (2) objections.
Suggestions:
(1) Suggestion: location - more appropriate locations must be available. See Section 5.1.
5182-22-003 WASTELINE, INC. Page 46 of 107
