I
South Hinsdale Response to Objections 1„ ,
12 July 2022
Objections:
(1) Objection: visual —scar the local landscape See Section 5.4.1
(2) Objection: economic — endanger other local resources This general comment seems
to be an introduction to the next two objections.
(3) Objection: water quality/wildlife — endanger delicate ecology of river drainages See
Section 5.2
(4)Objection: wildlife—fine sediments keep fish from spawning See Sections 4.2, 5.2, and
5.6
(5)Objection: economic—tourists will stop visiting and fish will stop spawning See Section
5.9 and sections on wildlife above.
(6) Objection: general—"irreversible" and "forever lasting"damage from a temporary mine
See Section 5.11.3. There are reclaimed "temporary"gravel mining locations within a mile
of this site which demonstrate they are neither irreversible or forever lasting.
3.16 Jerry McBay
List of one (1) suggestion and four (4) objections.
Suggestions:
(1) Suggestion: find location that does not interfere with travel into San Juans Thank you
for this suggestion. Unfortunately, this is not possible. Please see Section 5.4.1 about
alternatives. ANYgravel operation must have access to public roads, and this is the ONLY
public road into the South End. In both short-and long-term, this project will facilitate travel
into the mountains, by providing more economical essential construction materials, and
reduces impacts as compared to hauling those from great distances away.
Objections:
(1)Objection: road—Piedra Road is important, brings money to Pagosa Springs We agree
that Piedra Road is important, and the applicants also depend on it to help them make a
living. Again, this is a reason for this proposal: to properly maintain a critical highway.
(2) Objection: social impacts — general on those who live on or near Piedra Road See
Section 5.9
(3) Objection: road conditions —further deteriorated by use of trucks See Section 5.3
(4) Objection: location —near Piedra Trailhead See Section 5.1
3.17 Patrick VanKeuren and Carol Bronder
31 Monte Vista Drive; Hatcher Highlands, Pagosa Springs
List of four(4) claims, five (5) objections, and one (1)threat.
Claims:
(1) Claim: Texers are"absentee owners"and don't care about the community See Section
5.11.9
(2) Claim: Archuleta and Hinsdale County officials are corrupt This is a completely
inappropriate comment and is referred to the respective counties.
5182-22-003 WAST£L1N£, INC.
