South Hinsdale Response to Objections
12 July 2022
project. Others who stated to the Texers or those working with the Texers that they were
completely opposed to the project failed to submit any comments.
(2) Claim: gravel pit visible when "cresting Deadman's Curve" There is definitely potential
for some of the operations to be visible, at least for short periods, from that far south, but
it will not be a startling or significant and troubling view both because of the distance and
because the mining will actually be incised into the slope of the hill east of Piedra Road
and most of the shoulder of that slope (on USFS land) will be a visual barrier.
View from South on Piedra Road, looking north:magenta and green lines are pit
(3) Claim: road resurfacing project in 2021 improved road conditions but narrowed road
by 4 feet This is not directly applicable to this project but may show the impact of high
material costs which required the USFS to reduce the specifications for the road
improvement in order to meet the budget for the work.
(4) Claim: several cars and trucks have rolled over since 2021 project This is unknown,
but we are requesting data from Archuleta and Hinsdale County Sheriffs' Offices to find
out. Please note that again, this may be due to insufficient maintenance due to lack of
funds and cost of materials, or to failure to meet current road standards for safety, and
therefore has little to do directly with reasons to deny a gravel pit permit. There may also
be mitigating circumstances that caused the accidents not related to the road conditions
at all. These accidents may be an important reason to allow this pit to operate to reduce
costs of improvements and repairs to reduce such accidents.
(5) Claim: roadwork done in 2021 already "disintegrating" This is an issue for the USFS
and its contractors. We have observed that the roadwork is deteriorating, and believe this
emphasizes the need for having local, more economical sources of material to adequately
build, repair, and maintain roads. This applies not just to Piedra Road or other USFS
roads, but to county and private roads as well.
(6) Claim: Texers do not live here While we believe this is a moot point, and the Texers
deserve the right of owning and enjoying property here in the South End just as all
seasonal residents do, please see discussion in Section 5.11.
5182-22-003 WAST£LIN£, INC.
