South Hinsdale Response to Objections
12 July 2022
(2) Objection: location — gravel pit would prevent hiking and rock climbing on northern
Piedra River Trail. See Section 5.1.
Response: We have not been able to determine any mechanism or process by which
either hiking or rock-climbing would be prevented on ANY trail or slope located on NFS
lands, including the Piedra River Trail and the Ice Caves Trail. The proposed affected
mining area is located several hundred feet away from that trail at its closest point and is
on private land which is not on public land or open for hiking, rock climbing, parking, or
other activities without specific permission of the landowner which has been posted to this
effect.
(3) Objection: economic—negative impact on tourism and tourism dollars See Section 5.9
(4) Objection: viewshed— scars to the landscape See Sections 5.4 and 5.5
(5) Objection: noise — "a barrage" Noise from operations on the affected land will be in
compliance with State of Colorado limits. There will be no operations at night
(6) Objection: air quality/health —lung damaging dust and exhaust produced by hundreds
of dump trucks
Response: See Section 5.3.3. Truck traffic daily volumes (limited to workdays — no
weekends or holidays) will be significantly less than one hundred trucks. Assuming 20
tons/truck and annual haul of 30,000 tons, that would amount to a total of 1,500 trucks
PER year, hauling about 66 days per year, or 22.73 trucks per day—less than 3 per hour.
(7) Objection: water quality — risks serious contamination to the immediately adjacent
Piedra River, disrupt existing movement of surface water and groundwater, interrupt
natural water recharge and lead to reduced quantity and quality for wildlife and residents
See Section 5.2
(8) Objection: wildlife impacts—see item on water quality above; fish choked by sediment
and heavy metals contamination See Sections 5.2, 5.6, and 4.2
3.7 Sandy Engels
Pagosa Springs
List of two (2) objections.
(1) Objection: traffic—keep our area free of truck traffic and environmental impact on land
and streets See Section 5.3
(2) Objection: road conditions: wear and tear on Piedra Road — more deterioration to an
already fragile road See Section 5.3
3.8 Mary Brown
Wild Iris Drive, Pagosa Springs
List of three (3) objections.
(1) Objection: traffic: dangers of gravel trucks See Section 5.3
(2) Objection: water usage See Section 5.2
(3) Objection: air quality— dust See Section 5.8
5182-22-003 WASTELINE, INC.
